|
|
Sorry if this is a touchy subject, but I've been reading here for a while trying to figure this out on my own.
As a new listener, I hear a lot in the lyrics that seems to have a Christian message. There's lots of "devils" and "angels" and "rapture" and in one song they even all yell "jesus".
But then other lyrics seem to be a little more tongue in cheek
"I got dressed for church on Sunday, went down to the river instead"
"We all found God, and we bought him a shot".
Honestly, I opted out of going to see them recently because I was convinced (at that time) they are a Christian band that is trying get people hooked on good music, and then brainwash you with Christian propaganda in the lyrics. The Stryper of jam-rock? Someone please tell me it isn't so, because I dig them otherwise. I'm Ok with lyrics that discuss religious ideas as subjects; I am not down with people trying to convert you to believe what they do. |

You may be on to something... Tequila sounds like a southern baptist revival and makes me want to stand up and shout ... and drink tequila to get the demons out ... _________________ ... |

I'd like to point out that while the word "rapture" has been hijacked by the christian right, its meaning is not religious. In fact, I would counter that by the definition below, Tea Leaf Fiends experience a helluva a lot more rapture than non-fiend churchgoing folk.
rap•ture
Pronunciation: (rap'chur), [key]
—n., v. -tured, -tur•ing.
—n.
1. ecstatic joy or delight; joyful ecstasy.
2. Often, raptures. an utterance or expression of ecstatic delight.
3. the carrying of a person to another place or sphere of existence. _________________ And then the storm came
Sky turned grey
She was sucked under
And that's where she stayed |

You guys don't have to take the thread seriously (great thread so far, by the way), but, you know, it's all so fun... so here goes,
Many of Trevor's songs address religion and philosophy. It's a prevelant topic in the lyrics. To me it sounds like he has no need of organized religion - "I don't go to school and I don't go to churches, I don't visit graveyards, I don't know the purpose of 'em, I'm just living in between the Earth & Sky". He skips church to start Incandescent Devil. Live and let live, Trevor lays it on the line at the peak verse of the song For Every Lonely Lady...
There is no easy answer, there’s no one way to get by... You may spend your life through Jesus or you may waste it drinking his wine. / We’ve got to learn our lessons, we’ve got to lead our lives / You may be tempted by the devil or you may always do what’s right / And they say the soul is immortal, and our father’s in the sky / And He heards us like a shepherd into His paradise / And if that’s what makes you happy, it doesn’t matter if it’s true / But I don’t need no here nor after, I’ve got my paradise right here with you
Angels and devils are present symbols that I think can be real in our perception. The angel could be your love, the devil's in your troubles; or whatever you want to make of it.

Josh's tunes are more suggestively heretical, such as Wet Spot, Dragonfly, Death Cake Mother Fucker, and the martyr dream of Hanging From A Tree.

This is some pretty funny shit. But I've got to admit though that the first show I ever heard had a "I Believe" and I was listening casually while doing other stuff and not really hearing the lyrics. When the "Jeeeeeeessssssuuuuusssss!!!" ending came, I was kind of wondered what was up with that. Further listening showed me that this is a band that isn't necessarily religious but has a nice spiritual and philosophical streak that I can really dig.
This thread is kind of sad because it really shows that a certain fundementalist faction has so successfully hijacked religion in the is country, so that these days you can't mention the words "jesus", "angel" or "devil" without people thinking you're a Bible-thumping, fire-and-brimstone loving Jesus freak.

Taught to be proud of where I come from, and I'm so sad that I'm the only one. Like a cold preacher boy talking only to himself: how did he think that he got to promised lands?? Sometimes I'm confused and I don't know where I'm going... mistaking gentle rivers for that cold wind a-blowing. I'm always sure of an angel when she gets here, but I never see her coming and I miss her when she disappears... |

Sorry to jump in on this one late, but I could'nt help myself.
Without Angels and Devils (biblical or metaphorical) life would be pretty boring. |

just read today the supreme court just upheld the drinking of hallucinogenic tea for a small church in new mexico:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11188277/
| Quote: | | The tea, which contains an illegal drug known as DMT, is considered sacred to members of O Centro Espirita Beneficiente Uniao do Vegetal, which has a blend of Christian beliefs and South American traditions. Members believe they can understand God only by drinking the tea, which is consumed twice a month at four-hour ceremonies. |
after this weekend, i'll be ready to understand god at 4 hour tea drinking ceremony in a couple weeks. we'll buy him a shot. |
